Benefits of stretching
Stretching works by encouraging the elastic connective tissue (the fascia) surrounding a muscle to lengthen. Frequent stretching can actually make the entire muscle longer. The most obvious benefit of stretching is increased flexibility – that is, a joint’s ability to move through its entire range of motion. However, increased flexibility provides a number of other advantages such as helping balance muscle groups within the body, improving balance and posture, increasing agility and decreasing the risk of injury. A lack of flexibility can contribute to stiffness, poor posture, back pain and movement limitations as muscles become shorter, tighter and weaker.
Benefits of strength training
Strength training can benefit anyone. Studies have shown that even people in their 90s can improve their quality of life with moderate strength training. By strengthening muscles, bones, tendons and ligaments we are much less prone to injuries and fractures thus making day-to-day activities easier. Strength training is also beneficial to joints because the exercises take them through their full range of motion. Increased strength improves posture, reduces stress and reduces joint problems.
Benefits of balance training
Proprioception is the body’s sense of a joint position. Muscles, tendons and ligaments send messages to the brain which in turn tells them how to react to a stimulus. Using a wobble board or rocker is a time-tested rehabilitation method that helps retrain injured muscles, tendons or ligaments to react to instability. However exercising on a wobble board can benefit anyone since it improves agility and reaction skills as well as increasing strength, range of motion and stability in the joints. Improved proprioception has also been shown to improve posture and reduce the incidence of overuse injuries.
Our chiropractors will provide each patient with an individualised exercise programme to allow them to be active and perform functional pain-free movements in their daily activities or sports and hobbies. Scientific studies show that exercise combined with manual therapy is the most effective combination for recovery from an injury.
