The Open Upright MRI scanner at AECC University College provides an affordable solution for diagnostic imaging for healthcare professionals and patients.
An Open Upright MRI scan can help if you suffer from claustrophobia and enables more flexibility for patients who may not be able to lay completely flat. We highlight below just some of the reasons why we and other healthcare professionals refer their patients to use an open upright MRI scan.
Claustrophobic patients
The experience is much less intimidating than a traditional lie down tunnel MRI scan. The patient can move between scans and see out (front, above and behind). This may be helpful for people who are nervous in closed spaces.
Flexibility issues
Even though it is an upright scanner, scans can still be done lying down. However, even if lying down, the patient does not have to lie straight, making it possible to image arms, legs or spines in bent positions.
Respiratory conditions
Patients with certain respiratory conditions are sometimes not able to lie flat at all and therefore can not tolerate conventional scanning, but they can sometimes be scanned sitting.
Weight bearing scans
The advantage of being able to do an MRI upright is that the effects of gravity can be included in the results of the examination. This allows additional diagnostic information to be obtained. Larger patients may also be better accommodated by an Open Upright MRI scanner.
Diagnostic imaging
We are able to scan almost all areas of the body and can help to diagnose and monitor many medical conditions.
Sports injuries
MRI scans are often used to investigate sports injuries, especially to the spine, knee and ankle. Although elite athletes are referred, this mainly applies to recreational sportspeople who have had injuries that are not clearing up.
Prices
Scans cost £395 per body part and the following scans are available at AECC University College Bournemouth:-
- Lumbar spine
