Winchester chiropractor, Max Atkinson sees many patients suffering from headaches and migraine. A migraine is a severe, long-lasting headache usually felt as a throbbing pain at the front or on one side of the head. The World Health Organisation rates it as a leading cause of disability and Oxford University researchers say that up to one in five people suffer from migraines. Some people can have a warning visual disturbance, called an aura, before the start of the headache, and many people also have symptoms such as nausea and sensitivity to light during the headache itself.
A study led by Zameel Cader in 2010 at Oxford University found that if a specific gene does not work properly, environmental factors like certain food stuffs, temperature and poor joint movement in the neck can more easily trigger pain centres in the brain and cause a severe headache.
Our approach at Bradford House Chiropractic Clinic is to identify conditions with joint movement in the neck and jaw which can often cause tension in the muscles of the scalp which in turn can lead to headaches or common migraine in patients that are prone to this type of problem. Once we have examined the spine and made a specific diagnosis, if appropriate we will perform a series of treatments to the neck which can help to relieve the problem. This may involve manipulation, soft-tissue therapy, ultrasound or other procedures. We will also advise about long-term solutions to headaches and migraines through posture, ergonomics and diet.
