Now, this isn’t to say the holidays aren’t meant to be enjoyed. After all, balance is important, too. However, arguably, it’s easier to maintain consistent healthy habits that are a fixed part of your lifestyle rather than on and off. So, let’s dig a bit deeper. Why is staying fit so important, especially during the holidays? And how can you stay on track?
Why Is Staying Fit So Important?
Regular physical activity prevents various chronic diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. In turn, you experience a much higher quality of life—and even might just live longer.
Yet, the holidays offer a time when choosing delicious festive foods and drinks over hitting the gym is easy. But learning to put yourself and your fitness routine first is one of the best choices you can make. Come New Year’s, it’ll be much easier to return to your routine (without gym closures holding you back).
On top of this, doing the best you can in terms of maintaining your routine can help balance out all of the indulgences associated with this time of the year.
How Do You Keep Healthy During the Festive Season?
Inevitably, you can only do your very best. If the gym is closed, you might not be able to complete your regular workout sessions. But that’s okay!
There are other ways to look after your health this holiday season, including the tips below.
1. Strive to do one activity per day.
Staying fit during the holidays may simply mean moving your body each day. And you can even include your family in these movement goals.
For instance, make it a habit to go for a walk around the neighbourhood after dinner. This will help balance post-meal blood sugar levels, and it might provide a wondrous sight with all the Christmas decor and lights. Or set a challenge each day: Who can do the most push-ups by the end of the day? Who can complete a homemade obstacle course the fastest?
2. Select a variety of foods.
Variety is the spice of life. And when it comes to the food we eat, a variety of nutrients can be obtained by selecting a range of foods. At each event, strive for variety over quantity. This means filling your plate up with plenty of vegetables and colours.
Another note here: Watch your portion sizes, and eat slowly. This will ensure you don’t overdo it or overeat.
3. Start your New Year’s resolutions early.
If you aim to lift a certain amount or lose a set number of pounds in the New Year, why not start now? There’s no need to wait. And even if the gym is closed, there are so many ways to move your body at home.
For example, throw on a YouTube at-home workout video, perform a daily yoga routine, or start a regular daily habit of walking for 10-30 minutes each day. The key is to develop a regular habit that you can stick to!
4. Stick to small goals.
Stress is all too real during the busy holiday season. So, let’s not add to the overwhelm. Instead of setting lofty goals or overly restricting yourself, take a few small steps forward. For example, a daily walk of 10-15 minutes with the family is entirely attainable when compared to trying to do a 60-minute workout each day.
5. Aim for progress, not perfection.
Remember, the holidays are a time to be enjoyed and savoured with those we love. Thus, it’s truly about finding balance. Again, focus on small steps toward your goals, but also don’t forget about what’s truly important.
