In the US, chronic pain is estimated to affect at least 100 million people, accounting for about a third of the population. The prevalence of chronic pain in the country has seen a large number of work absentees than any other disease.
A top worrying trend to pain management is the fact that a large majority of the people suffering from acute or chronic pain, including persistent neck stiffness, sore knee or backpain are turning to over-the-counter pain relief. In a recent FDA release, however, strict warnings were issued against the misuse and overdosing of OTCs as a result of potential severe complications, including hearing disorders, liver failure and stomach ulcers.
Safe Chronic Pain Treatment
In 2016, the FDA emphasised on the use of opioids as a last resort for severe pain. As an alternative to the harmful effects of OTC pain medications, the FDA has instead recommended low level lasers from Erchonia. This treatment has been cleared by the FDA for its safety and effectiveness in the treatment of post operative pain, chronic neck pain, shoulder pain and heel pain linked to planter fasciitis.
Low Level Laser Therapy
Also known as cold laser therapy or photobiomodulation, low level laser therapy (LLLT) is a therapeutic application of light to the body. During this treatment, a source of light is placed on or near your skin to allow the photons to travel through your tissues to interact with your body cells.
Instead of the common high-powered lasers, low level lasers, broadband and LEDs are used for the release of red to near infra-red light. Given that the low-power light does not produce heat, your skin is not burned during the treatment. As a response, the photochemical changes within the cells help with pain management, reduce inflammation, boost wound healing and the regeneration of tissue.
How Low-Level Lasers are Used for Pain Relief
Cold lasers are highly effective in the stimulation of all body cells, including ligaments, cartilage, nerves and muscles. It works the same way as photosynthesis in plants, whereby it is absorbed by the body and instantly comes into contact with the component sensitive to light within the cells. The light then stimulates the mitochondria, triggering the cells to produce ATP. Being a non-intrusive procedure, you can still have it done in your local clinic. With this treatment, no recovery time is needed, and it does not pose any side effects.
Erchonia laser therapy can be used for a range of orthopaedic and neuropathic pain. It has also been found to be highly effective in managing pain in athletes. It is believed that the reason it is highly effective in managing pain is because it stimulates the nerve endings of pain receptors and nociceptors found close to the surface of the skin.
Although this is a new treatment method, it has had tremendous effects and more excellent results can be expected. Note, however, it is not the best option for every patient. For instance, pregnant women are not allowed to use this method because it could interfere with the development of the foetus.
